From Service to Tech: Why Straight Talkers Matter When You’re Building Something New

October 25, 2025

Every business evolution has a moment where someone asks the uncomfortable question. For us at MCB Business Partners, that moment came more than two years ago — and it came from a straight talker.

Catching up with Adam Boyle at the recent Hunter Innovation Festival felt fitting. It was Adam’s push back then that nudged us from being purely a service business into embracing technology — a decision that has shaped everything we’re doing today.

The journey hasn’t been linear. It’s been challenging, fun, costly, and at times deeply uncomfortable. But it’s also now becoming genuinely rewarding.

Today, our tech product has real traction, a healthy sales pipeline, and new opportunities emerging all the time. And none of that happens without the right people around you — especially those willing to give you honest advice when you need it most.

The Value of Straight Talk (and Strong Coffee)

One of the lessons reinforced along the way is simple:

You need to surround yourself with people who’ve done it before — and who aren’t afraid to tell you the truth.

Adam’s advice and perspective have been invaluable, as has the behind‑the‑scenes support from Jo Boyle — the coffees, the occasional whip, the reality checks, and the conversations that help you see clearly when you’re too close to the problem.

Regions like the Hunter are full of people like this — founders, operators, and mentors who quietly give back by helping others avoid the same mistakes they’ve already made.

We need to get better at unlocking and supporting our own, because that informal mentorship ecosystem is one of the region’s greatest (and most under‑recognised) assets.

Showcasing What We’ve Built: Exclusive at Hunter Innovation Festival

At this year’s Hunter Innovation Festival, we had the opportunity to showcase our tech platform, Exclusive, in StartUp Alley — and to have some important conversations with organisations across the region.

Our pitch was intentionally simple.

If pre‑tertiary education programs or education‑related investment are part of your ESG strategy or future talent plan, there are three questions you should be asking:

  1. Are our programs or investments compliant?
(So many organisations get this wrong — often unintentionally.)
  2. How are we actually measuring success?
Outputs are easy. Outcomes are harder — and far more important.
  3. Is there value being missed?
In data, in engagement, in pathways, and in long‑term workforce alignment.

This is exactly where MCB Business Partners comes in.

Where Tech Meets ESG and Workforce Strategy

Exclusive was built to address a gap we see repeatedly across industry, government, and education:

Organisations are investing time and money into education and youth programs — often with the best intentions — but lack:

  • Clear compliance alignment
  • Meaningful measurement frameworks
  • Visibility of long‑term value and impact
  • Confidence that these investments are truly supporting future workforce needs

Our tech helps organisations understand, measure, and maximise the impact of their engagement with pre‑tertiary education — turning well‑intended activity into strategic, compliant, and measurable investment.

It’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing it better.

A Region That Backs Innovation

A big thank you to Zara Crichton GAICD and Baidy Barton for the greenlight to put up our banner and have real conversations in StartUp Alley, and to Alex Brennan for his tireless work bringing the region’s innovation story back to life (absolute legend).

And to Claire Quigley — thanks for telling me to pull my head in and join Hunter iF. If you care about innovation, entrepreneurship, and the future of the Hunter, it really is a no‑brainer.

Looking Ahead

The shift from service to tech has changed how we think, how we work, and how we support our partners — but it hasn’t changed why we exist.

We’re here to:

  • Help organisations engage meaningfully with the future workforce
  • Ensure education‑focused investment is compliant, measurable, and valuable
  • Create clearer pathways between young people and industry

And along the way, we’re grateful for the straight talkers who help keep us moving forward.

Because no business builds something new on its own — and no region thrives unless it backs the people willing to have a go.
