We’re excited to share an important milestone for MCB Business Partners. A chapter co‑authored by our CEO, Duncan Burck, has just been published in The Elephant’s Leg II — a curated collection exploring creativity in action across technology, economic development, and social innovation.
While publication is an achievement in its own right, what makes this chapter particularly meaningful is what it validates: the role of creativity as a powerful enabler of collaboration, systems change, and youth voice within place‑based communities.
Creativity as a Catalyst for Sustainnovation
Our chapter focuses on the Sustainnovation Challenge, one of MCB Business Partners’ flagship programs, and examines how creativity operates not as an abstract concept, but as a practical mechanism for connecting:
- Local government
- Schools and educators
- Industry partners
- And, most importantly, young people
Through the Sustainnovation Challenge, students are invited to explore real challenges and opportunities in their local communities and propose ideas that respond to social, economic, and environmental priorities.
Creativity is the connective tissue.
It allows young people to:
- Reframe complex issues in accessible ways
- Bring fresh perspectives to entrenched challenges
- Develop confidence in their ability to contribute meaningfully
- See themselves as active participants in shaping their communities
At the same time, it enables industry and government to engage with education in ways that are authentic, future‑focused, and grounded in place.
More Than a Chapter: What the Process Taught Us
What sets this project apart is not just that it resulted in a published academic chapter — but what the process itself unlocked.
Working through the research, case study development, and peer review provided:
- Clarity around the unique value of the Sustainnovation Challenge
- Validation of our approach from an academic and practitioner lens
- A deeper understanding of how creativity strengthens cross‑sector partnerships
- Language and frameworks that help articulate impact more clearly to partners
These are insights we genuinely believe would not have emerged without stepping into the academic research space.
It reinforced an important lesson:
when industry and academia collaborate with purpose, both are stronger for it.
The Power of the Right Collaboration
This chapter was shaped through a deeply collaborative process, and we’re incredibly grateful to the people and institutions who made it possible.
A huge thank you to:
- Professor Paul Egglestone FRSA and Jon Drummond, whose guidance was instrumental in shaping the research pitch and delivering the case study project
- FASTLAB, with whom we continue to collaborate today
- The University of Newcastle, for supporting the research through its Rapid Program
- Book editors Craig Hight and Mario Minichiello (PhD) for bringing together such a thoughtful and diverse collection of work
This project stands as a strong example of how academia, industry, and practice‑led organisations can work together to generate insights that are both rigorous and real‑world relevant.
Why This Matters for Education, Industry, and Regions
At MCB Business Partners, we’ve long believed that:
- Young people deserve a meaningful voice in shaping the future
- Education–industry–government partnerships are strategic assets, not side projects
- Creativity is essential for navigating complex transitions — from sustainability to workforce transformation
This publication reinforces that belief and provides an evidence‑based foundation for the work we do with partners across Australia.
It also strengthens our ability to:
- Design better programs
- Support more effective engagement between sectors
- Measure and communicate value more clearly
- Continue evolving the Sustainnovation Challenge and related initiatives

We’re proud of this milestone — not just because it’s published, but because it reflects the depth, intent, and collaborative spirit behind the work we do every day.
And most importantly, because it reinforces a simple truth:
When young people are empowered with creativity, connection, and opportunity, communities are stronger for it.
